Vacationland - John Hodgeman

This book was a delightful little treat! I picked it up from the laundry room at 2626 after finishing the Da Vinci biography when I wanted something a little easier. John Hodgeman is hilarious - I loved his voice. He’s a good writer too. It’s clear that he has a literary background (he went to YALE!)

I like books and movies where you get a real taste the people and culture of a place. Hodgeman does this hilariously with the people in Boston and in Maine. He was able to simultaneously make fun of the people and show his love and admiration for them. Looking back at this book a couple of weeks after finishing it, I get a sense of Hodgeman chuckling at his circumstances. He’s a smart guy, a hilarious guy, but also totally self aware of the awesome circumstance he’s in now. Of course he worked extremely hard and made it through times when he wasn’t a successful comedian but he’s also aware of how rare his circumstances are. This is my favorite kind of person.

I could see myself reading this book again - maybe do it once a summer even. It’s kind of like a mood setter for the season.
